Biker Gaurav Walavkar had been brought to the police station late on Sunday night as he could not provide his driving license and vehicle documents on being caught driving without wearing a helmet.
The police later arrested Walavkar and his wife (28) on the charge of obstructing a public servant from performing his duty under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), since the couple had also argued with and abused the policeman before the slapping incident.
Both husband and wife work with private firms.
Sub inspector Sanjay Adling of the Bibvewadi police on Tuesday said, “It all happened during a nakabandi exercise around 11.50pm on Sunday, at a spot close to the police station. The police stopped the helmetless biker, who was returning home from work, and sought his license and documents. But the latter said he was not carrying them with him.”
Adling added, “Walavkar was brought to the police station, from where he called his wife. The couple then picked a fight with the personnel, saying they stay nearby and should be allowed to go. The couple also then accused the policeman of harassing them and other motorists by stopping them during the nakabandi exercise. They abused and slapped the policeman and challenged him to take action against them.”
