PUNE: A 43-year-old panipuri vendor suffering from a chronic kidney disease got a new life after his wife donated her organ, paving way for the transplant surgery on April 20.
Although kidney transplants are common, the deteriorating condition of the patient and the high complications involved in this transplant made the procedure difficult and rare, doctors at the Dr DY Patil Hospital and Research Centre in Pimpri, where the transplant was carried out, said.
The doctors said the surgery was the first in the hospital. “Only five such surgeries have been carried out in India so far, while the global count stands at 14,” a doctor said.
The patient, a resident of Chikhali, suffered from a chronic kidney disease for the last three years. He was undergoing dialysis after the failure of both his organs.
The 42-year-old wife of the patient, in a desperate attempt to save her husband, donated her kidney. All legal procedures and tests were carried out, after which the wife was found to be a perfect donor for the street vendor.
