He was arrested with two of his relatives for stealing Rs17 lakh and gold worth Rs 3.6 crore from the Kalika Mandir branch of a nationalised bank in Jalgaon.
Jalgaon SP M Rajkumar said: “Suspended sub-inspector Shankar Jasak is the prime accused. He was arrested from Karjat in Raigad district. Manoj Suryawanshi and Ramesh Jasak, the sub-inspector’s brother-in-law and father, respectively, are the two others who committed the crime on June 1 at 9.30 am.”
Suryawanshi was the inside man. It was his responsibility to ensure the cleanliness of the branch before banking operations began each day. He also operated on the chest regularly. Suryawanshi along with Shankar and Ramesh Jasak planned the heist, which was executed by the suspended cop, claimed Rajkumar.
The SP said the police teams initially had no clue about the identities of the suspects as they had even taken the DVR (where the CCTV footage was stored) with them while fleeing.
“While interrogation of the three cleanliness staff, the bank manager and the security guard, Suryawanshi’s statements were found to be contradictory. That is why we focussed on him,” Rajkumar added.
The robbers had even stabbed the manager in the thigh and had used his bike to flee. When the motorcycle was untraceable despite a nakabandi, the police teams started searching every road in the town. They came across a floating helmet in a nullah, about 1.5 km from the bank.
