PUNE: State director general of police (DGP) Rajnish Seth on Tuesday said he had approved the Pune police’s proposal to install 2,800 CCTV cameras covering various roads and areas in the city for effective monitoring of crime and traffic. This will add to the existing 1,400 CCTV cameras that are operational.
Seth told reporters, “We are also encouraging private and government establishments to install good quality CCTV cameras which can be integrated with our monitoring system. Government offices like Pune Municipal Corporation, Pune Smart City, Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority, malls, hospitals and other private establishments could install such cameras on their premises in a way that it also covers public roads nearby.”
Pune police commissioner Retesh Kumarr said, “We are already monitoring traffic and have also solved many crimes using the existing 1,400 CCTV cameras installed by the state home department. We had sent a fresh proposal to the DGP office and home department for another 2,800 CCTV cameras. The same will now be installed soon.”
Kumaar said cops had studied crimes area-wise and street-wise. Data of the last 10 years was considered that included chain snatchings, robberies and dacoities and other crimes like accidents and body offences. “Based on the study, we prepared the proposal and we want to cover areas where crimes take place repeatedly. We already have 125 small chowks and 135 big chowks under CCTV surveillance. Now, we want more junctions and roads to be covered.”
