PUNE: NCP chief Sharad Pawar on Friday said, “In a democratic society, every citizen has the right to express their views. But, if someone thinks that threats can silence anyone, it is their misunderstanding.” He was speaking to media persons in Pune after he received a threat earlier in the day.
Pawar’s daughter and Baramati MP Supriya Sule on Friday approached the Mumbai police commissioner with a complaint that he was threatened by a person on a social media platform. It said that he will meet the same fate as slain rationalist Narendra Dabholkar, who was shot dead in Pune in 2013.
Meanwhile, the Pune police have deployed additional security at Pawar’s residence on Ganeshkhind Road in Pune. The NCP president said that he has full faith in the police force’s ability. “I am not worried at all. The police are capable of handling the law-and-order situation in the state. However, those who are in power cannot shy away from their responsibilities,” he added.
Leader of the opposition in the state assembly Ajit Pawar reacted to the threat. “The social media account (from which the threats were issued to Pawar) is in the name of one Saurav Pimpalkar. We do not know if he is really a BJP worker. The police should find out who is the mastermind behind Pimpalkar. They also should track down the cellphone number to find out with whom he was in touch,” he added.
The NCP leader said that he will take up the issue with deputy chief minister Devendra Fadnavis who also holds the portfolio of the home department.
“Nobody should take advantage of the rights given by our constitution. There can be ideological differences and we are fine with it but one cannot take the law into their hands,” he added.
Reacting to BJP leader Nilesh Rane’s social media post against Sharad Pawar, Ajit, who is also his nephew, said, “There is a trend to tarnish the image of some leaders on social media. Senior leaders of every party should take note of such attempts by their respective partymen and reprimand them for using foul language.”
