KOLHAPUR: Local crime branch, Kolhapur arrested two people involved in robbery at Katyayani jewellers at Balinga on Thursday, June 8.
Police have arrested Satish Povalkar and Vishal Varekar and seized about 22 lakhs worth of jewelery, a motorcycle and a car used in the crime total worth about 29 lakhs 88 thousand 700 rupees.
It has been found that this robbery was carried out with the help of four more suspects from others state and search for them is currently going on. Superintendent of Police Mahendra Pandit gave this information in a press conference on Saturday evening.
Earlier on Thursday, the robbers had stolen jewellery worth Rs 1.8 crore and Rs 1.5 lakh in cash from a store in the Balinga village, on the outskirts of Kolhapur city in broad day light. The store owner Ramesh Mali and his relative Jitu Mali were injured as robbers fired 10 rounds on them.
While the investigation of the said crime was going on, Mahadev Waghmode, Inspector of Police, Local Crime Investigation Branch, Kolhapur, got secret information that the said crime has been carried by Vishal Varekar from Koparde village and goldsmith Satish Pohalkar along with their local and other state’s suspects. When police raided the house of Vishal Varekar at Koparde village and interrogated him, the two suspects, Varekar and Pohalkar admitted that they had committed the crime with the help of one local and four other accused.
The gold ornaments weighing 367 grams worth Rs. 22,38,700, a four-wheeler vehicle and a moped used in the crime with a total value of Rs. 29,88,700/- have been seized while the accused Vishal Dhanaji Varekar (32), from Koparde village in Karveer tehsil of Kolhapur and Satish Sakharam Pohalkar (37), resident of Kanerkar Nagar, Ring Road, Phulewadi, Kolhapur have been arrested.
Vishal Varekar is an accused on record in a fraud case. While he was in Kalamba Jail, he got to know the accused from other states with whom he planned out the crime after they came out of the jail.
The preliminary investigation has revealed that the rest of the jewellery stolen in the crime was taken away by the accused who had came from outside the state and their car was traced in CCTV footage moving towards Pune, informed SP Mahendra Pandit.
