What do I need on a long plane ride?
There are a lot of long flight essentials you’ll need for a long plane ride which is why you gotta keep reading to see the best things you’ll need to cater to your needs for a long plane ride.
Carry on essentials for sleeping on long flights
Finding the right sleeping long flight essentials to guarantee a good night’s rest is quite important. There are a lot of things that can not only help you sleep on your long haul flight but also help adjust to the timezone you are arriving at. These are some of my necessities for a good’s night rest on the plane and at my destination.
Melatonin or ZZyquil
Taking melatonin or ZZZquil can be beneficial for individuals who experience jet lag or have difficulty falling asleep in unfamiliar environments, such as during a long flight. It can help adjust your body’s internal clock and promote better sleep. These have been one of my long flight essentials for every trip I’ve been to. It helps me stay asleep at night even when my body wants to be awake. It keeps me asleep longer and allows me to feel well-rested. These are a must of your long flight essentials especially if you are traveling internationally over several timezones.
A sleeping mask is an indispensable essential for a long-haul flight, offering a multitude of benefits that can significantly enhance your in-flight experience. One of the primary advantages of a sleeping mask is its ability to block out unwanted light. On long flights, cabin lighting can be inconsistent, with bright overhead lights or fellow passengers using personal reading lights.
By wearing a sleeping mask, you create a dark environment that signals to your body that it’s time to rest. This darkness promotes the release of melatonin, a hormone that regulates sleep, making it easier for you to fall asleep and stay asleep throughout the journey.
Additionally, a sleeping mask can shield your eyes from any external distractions, allowing you to enter a serene and tranquil state, perfect for catching some much-needed shut-eye. With its compact size and travel-friendly nature, a sleeping mask is a must-have item in your carry-on, ensuring that you can enjoy uninterrupted sleep, wake up refreshed, and arrive at your destination feeling revitalized and ready to embark on your adventures.
A travel blanket is an absolute must-have for anyone embarking on a long-haul flight. Not only does it provide a sense of comfort and familiarity in an unfamiliar environment, but it also offers practical benefits that can greatly enhance your in-flight experience. With fluctuating cabin temperatures and limited control over the air conditioning, having a travel blanket ensures that you can regulate your own body temperature and stay cozy throughout the journey.
It provides an extra layer of warmth and insulation, making those long hours in the air more comfortable. It’s also important to add that the blankets on airlines aren’t always washed properly and may only be sanitized. An airline employee noted, “freshly washed blankets are only supplied to the first flights of the day” (travelandleisure.com). Additionally, a travel blanket can double as a versatile accessory, serving as a pillow, lumbar support, or even a privacy curtain when draped over your seat.
Traveling with earplugs on a long flight is a wise decision that can greatly enhance your overall travel experience. Earplugs provide a multitude of benefits that can make those hours in the air more peaceful and enjoyable. Firstly, they effectively block out the constant hum of the airplane engine and muffle the noise of fellow passengers, creating a quieter and more serene environment.
This reduction in noise can help reduce stress, fatigue, and sensory overload, allowing you to relax and unwind during the flight. Let’s just say I never leave without my earplugs – they are also great for hostels, hotels, and to reduce noises from you partner or friend’s snoring.
A pair of compression socks are specially designed to apply gentle pressure to your lower legs, promoting healthy blood circulation and preventing the risk of conditions like deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Sitting for extended periods during flights can lead to swelling, discomfort, and the formation of blood clots.
By wearing compression socks, you can counteract these effects by enhancing blood flow and reducing fluid retention. Not only do compression socks help prevent potential health issues, but they also alleviate leg fatigue and cramping, making you feel more refreshed upon arrival. These are also great to put on while in the plane so that your feet are in a clean pair of socks and use the slippers to keep your feet clean from the dirty floor. These are part of my long flight essentials.
A neck pillow is an indispensable travel accessory for long journeys, providing much-needed support and comfort during flights, train rides, or road trips. Designed to cradle your neck and support your head, a neck pillow helps alleviate strain and prevents your head from bobbing or leaning uncomfortably while you sleep or relax. This is a must-have for long distances as you travel through different time zones.
Long flight essentials for entertainment
Long flights can often feel monotonous, but with the right entertainment essentials, you can ensure an enjoyable and engaging journey. Having your own form of entertainment is crucial, as it allows you to tailor your experience according to your preferences.
Whether it’s a captivating book, a fully charged tablet with your favorite movies and TV shows, a playlist of your go-to songs, or a portable gaming console, having a variety of entertainment options at your fingertips guarantees that you won’t be at the mercy of the limited choices provided by the airline. You have to choose your long flight essentials wisely when it comes to entertainment.
iPad with Downloaded Shows and Movies
When it comes to keeping boredom at bay during long flights, having an iPad loaded with your favorite shows and movies is an absolute game-changer. The convenience and versatility of an iPad make it the perfect travel companion for entertainment on the go. My iPad is my go to as it’s one of the best tablets for travel and ultimately part of my long flight essentials.
This is honestly something so crucial and important for me as I find shows that I love and haven’t had the time to watch. I’ll also take the time to download some movies that my husband and I haven’t had a chance to watch and we’ll watch them together. We have Bose noise canceling headphones which with the app, you can connect two pairs to one device as we watch on my iPad together. These are my go to for my long flight essentials.
When it comes to long flights, peace, and tranquility can be hard to come by amidst the constant noise and commotion. That’s where Bose Noise-Cancelling Headphones step in as an essential travel companion. These remarkable headphones are designed to create a sanctuary of serenity, immersing you in a world of uninterrupted bliss. By using advanced technology to actively block out ambient noise, Bose Noise Canceling Headphones allow you to escape the distractions and chaos of the airplane cabin.
Not only do they block out the noise, but they are the most comfortable headphones I have and something I can wear for an extended period of time like an entire flight. I couldn’t say the same for my airpods or Samsung buds live. If you want to ensure a comfortable flight, I would only go with these Bose noise canceling headphones. These are something you should have part of long flight essentials kit.
Not this might not be so crucial for everyone, but it’s important to have if you work, prefer to have a laptop over a tablet, or just like having access to a computer while abroad. A laptop is a great option for entertainment, work, and definitely a must for many bloggers and photographers. I can usually take time to edit my photos while on the plane or write a few blog posts as well which can definitely kill some time while in the air.
In today’s digitally connected world, a charger becomes an indispensable lifeline during a long flight. The ability to keep your devices powered up and ready for use is crucial for staying entertained, connected, and organized throughout the journey. Whether it’s your smartphone, tablet, e-reader, or laptop, having a charger ensures that you never have to worry about running out of battery power when you need it the most.
Airplanes often have an outlet that you can directly plug into with a power adapter and some even have just USB ports next to your entertainment system. I’ll sometime also bring my portable charger or power bank for additional security if charging is unavailable while on the plan. These power banks are what I recommend if you want to bring one on your next trip!
Most headphones these days are Bluetooth, unfortunately, many airlines still only have the capability to use wired headphones for their entertainment systems. This device allows you to use the wired port while also connecting to your own bluetooth wireless device. This will allow you to use your own headphones versus the cheap ones provided by the airlines. Although not necessarily long flight essentials, they can be if you want that access.
Portable Board Games or Card Games
These compact games offer a delightful escape from the monotony of air travel and provide an opportunity to engage with fellow passengers or travel companions. Whether it’s a classic game like Uno, a strategic card game like Settlers of Catan, or a travel-sized version of your favorite board game, these entertainment gems can bring people together, spark laughter, and create lasting memories.
Portable board games or card games not only help pass the time but also promote social interaction and mental stimulation, making the flight experience more enjoyable and immersive. This is one of my favorite ways to stay entertained on a flight without a tablet or laptop.
A good book
Whether you prefer gripping mysteries, captivating adventures, thought-provoking literature, or heartwarming stories, a book has the power to transport you to new worlds, ignite your imagination, and provide a welcome escape during a long journey. As you flip through the pages, you can immerse yourself in captivating narratives, connect with intriguing characters, and explore distant lands without ever leaving your seat.
The best thing about traveling with a book? You never have to worry about keeping it charged. This will always be easily accessible and a great way to stay entertained at a cafe, in the air, at an airport, and so many more places. If you prefer digital, you can also look into getting an Audible membership.
Health & beauty travel essentials for long flights
Staying hydrated and getting sleep is probably one of the most important thing to do. You should also do a pre flight skincare routine to keep your face fresh and rejuvenated before the flight. It’s so dry on the plane, that it’s almost too late to do your skincare in the air – however, still okay to do.
Lip balm is a true lifesaver during long-haul flights, keeping your lips hydrated and protected from the dry cabin air. The low humidity in the airplane environment can cause lips to become dry, chapped, and uncomfortable. However, a swipe of lip balm provides instant relief and moisture, preventing the discomfort and pain associated with dry lips. The nourishing ingredients in lip balm help to replenish lost moisture and form a protective barrier, keeping your lips soft and supple throughout the journey.
Nose Spray or Tissues
Nose spray and tissues are essential items to combat the effects of dryness and congestion during long-haul flights. The dry cabin air can cause discomfort, leading to dry nasal passages and crunchy boogers – YUCK! Using a nasal spray specifically formulated for moisturizing can help alleviate dryness and promote easier breathing. It helps to hydrate and soothe irritated nasal passages, providing relief from discomfort.
Hand Sanitizer or Sanitizing Wipes
Bringing hand sanitizer on a long flight is a crucial step in maintaining good hygiene and preventing the spread of germs. The confined space of an airplane cabin can be a breeding ground for bacteria and viruses, making it important to prioritize hand cleanliness.
Hand sanitizer provides a convenient and portable solution for disinfecting your hands when soap and water are not readily available. Its high alcohol content kills germs on contact, reducing the risk of illness and keeping you and those around you safe. With COVID, we can definitely see why it’s so important to have this tool on hand.
With the antibacterial wipes, you can take the time to wipe down your table, chair, and other parts while within the plane. These will help you sanitize them to your liking and be able to feel comfortable on your flight. These are included in my carry-on essentials as they are great for so many multi-purpose things.
By having a water bottle on hand, you can ensure easy access to water and replenish your body’s fluids regularly. Staying hydrated not only helps prevent dry skin and lips but also supports overall well-being, including digestion and circulation. Additionally, having a reusable water bottle is environmentally friendly and reduces waste from single-use plastic bottles.
Many airports now have water filling stations or flight attendants offer water on the aircraft, allowing you to refill your bottle during the flight. So, make sure to pack a water bottle and prioritize hydration to feel refreshed and energized throughout your long-haul journey. You can also reduce the size by grabbing this collapsible water bottle or look for a water bottle with a filter. These are a must for your long flight essentials.
Face wipes are a must-have essential for long-haul flights, offering a quick and convenient way to refresh your skin during the journey. These travel-friendly wipes effectively remove dirt, oil, and impurities, leaving your skin clean and revitalized. Additionally, face wipes are a hassle-free alternative to traditional cleansing routines, providing a refreshing boost without the need for water or rinsing.
Compact and easy to pack, they offer a convenient solution to maintain a healthy and refreshed complexion throughout your long flight, helping you arrive at your destination feeling revitalized and ready to take on new adventures. Don’t forget to include these on your long flight essentials.
Night Face Cream
Long-haul flights can take a toll on your skin, leaving it dry, dull, and fatigued. That’s where a night face cream like Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair comes to the rescue. This exceptional skincare product is specifically designed to provide intensive hydration and rejuvenation while you sleep, making it an ideal companion for long flights.
The advanced formula works tirelessly to replenish moisture, repair damage caused by environmental stressors, and restore the natural radiance of your skin. I don’t typically suggest you bring a face mask on the plane, mostly because you should be doing this in your pre-flight skincare routine. A face mask can be awkward to wear on the plane, but also may not be as hydrating as you think on the plane vs prior to the flight.
Long FLight Essentials: Additional airplane essentials for long flights
When it comes to snacks for a long flight, it’s a good idea to pack a mix of nutritious options to keep you energized and satisfied throughout the journey. Here are some snack ideas for your long flight:
- Nuts and seeds: Almonds, cashews, walnuts, or sunflower seeds are excellent choices as they provide healthy fats, protein, and fiber.
- Fresh fruit: Pack bite-sized fruits like grapes, berries, or sliced apples for a refreshing and hydrating snack.
- Protein bars or energy bars: Choose bars that are high in protein and low in added sugars to provide a quick and convenient source of energy.
- Dried fruit: Grab some dried mangoes, apricots, or raisins for a sweet and naturally energizing snack.
- Crackers: Opt for whole grain crackers for a satisfying snack.
- Vegetable sticks and hummus: Cut up carrots, celery, or bell peppers and bring along a small container of hummus for a crunchy and nutritious snack. The hummus however, could take up your a bit of your liquids, so keep that in mind.
- Dark chocolate: Indulge in a small piece of dark chocolate (70% cocoa or higher) for a sweet treat that also provides antioxidants.
- Granola or trail mix: Create your own mix with a combination of nuts, dried fruit, and whole grain cereal for a filling and customizable snack.
- Rice cakes or popcorn: Choose low-sodium rice cakes or air-popped popcorn for a lighter and crunchy snack option.
Remember to pack your snacks in travel-friendly containers or individual portions to make them easily accessible during the flight. It’s also a good idea to check any restrictions or regulations on bringing food items on board, especially for international flights. Stay mindful of your snacking and aim for a balance of nutrients to keep your energy levels stable throughout the journey.
Gum is a fantastic addition to your long-haul flight essentials for several reasons. Firstly, chewing gum can help alleviate ear pressure and discomfort during takeoff and landing by encouraging swallowing and equalizing the pressure in your ears. This can be especially helpful if you’re prone to ear pain or have sinus congestion.
Secondly, gum can help keep your mouth feeling fresh and combat any dryness or stale taste that can occur during a long flight. It can also stimulate saliva production, which aids in keeping your mouth hydrated and reducing the risk of bad breath. Additionally, chewing gum can provide a pleasant distraction and help pass the time during the flight but also keep your mouth minty fresh. Just be sure to choose sugar-free gum to maintain good oral health and consider bringing extra packs to share with travel companions or to have throughout your journey. Just keep in mind that some places gum is illegal like Singapore!
A toothbrush may seem like a small item, but it can have a big impact on your comfort and well-being during a long-haul flight. Having a toothbrush handy allows you to maintain your oral health and freshen up, providing a sense of cleanliness and revitalization during the journey. Brushing your teeth not only removes the buildup of plaque and bacteria but also helps combat any lingering tastes or odors. It can leave you feeling refreshed, confident, and ready to face the next leg of your travel adventure.
Your passport serves as your official identification and proof of citizenship, granting you access to foreign countries and validating your right to travel. It is a symbol of freedom, opportunity, and the gateway to new cultures and destinations. Without your passport, international travel becomes impossible. Therefore, it is crucial to keep your passport safe, secure, and up to date. Don’t forget to take a picture and email it to yourself or put it in the cloud in case yours is stolen or lost.
These important documents ensure your identity, legal compliance, and allow for seamless entry and exit from different countries. The most important travel document is your passport, serving as your official identification and proof of citizenship. Additionally, depending on your destination, you may need additional documents such as visas, travel insurance, and vaccination certificates.
It’s important to research and prepare the necessary documents well in advance to avoid any last-minute complications. Keeping your travel documents organized and easily accessible throughout your journey will help streamline the check-in process, pass through immigration smoothly, and ensure you have a stress-free travel experience. Make sure these are on your list of long flight essentials.
