PUNE: The Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU), in a June 8 notification, has said that those affiliated colleges which have not begun the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) evaluation process will be prohibited from admitting first year undergraduate students.
The notification stated that admissions for the 2023-24 academic year would be stopped in for defaulting colleges in Pune, Ahmednagar and Nashik.
The state higher education department on May 23 had also issued a circular prohibiting colleges without NAAC evaluation from admitting first year undergraduate students. According to the circular, the university on May 25 had given instructions in this regard to all its affiliated colleges and had asked colleges to submit information regarding the NAAC evaluation process.
Standard XII results were declared on May 25 and the first-year admission process started in all colleges. “Many colleges have not yet done the evaluation. Some among them are still recovering from the pandemic. Colleges without NAAC evaluation will not be able to admit students for first year undergraduate courses,” SPPU registrar Prafulla Pawar said. Assessment by the NAAC has gained importance in view of the implementation of the New Education Policy.
Among other states, Maharashtra leads in NAAC assessment due to which the higher education department has made efforts to ensure all colleges undertake the evaluation.
The Savitribai Phule Pune University has also clarified that colleges should not admit first year undergraduate students without prior permission of the university and the responsibility will remain with the concerned institution.
