PUNE: Four men allegedly thrashed an autorickshaw driver before taking away his three-wheeler and cellphone on June 13 in Lohegaon.
This was just a day after a similar incident was reported from Chikhali. According to an officer from the Airport police, the 20-year-old complainant said that around 8.30pm, he was driving towards Lohegaon to drop off a passenger. “When he reached the Lohegaon crematorium, four unknown men blocked his way,” the officer said. According to the complainant, the men forced him and the passenger out of the rickshaw. “One of them then took charge of the vehicle and drove towards a secluded spot with the victim and passenger,” the officer added.
At the spot they demanded money from the driver. “When he told them that he did not have money, they thrashed him with a stick, snatched his cellphone and drove away in his rickshaw,” the officer said.
The driver approached the police on Thursday. “We have registered a case under section 394 (voluntarily causing hurt while committing robbery) of the Indian Penal Code,” the officer said.
A similar robbery took place in Chikhali on June 12, in which four men had robbed another autorickshaw driver posing as passengers. The police are verifying whether the same gang was involved in both the robberies.
