PUNE: A 65-year-old retired clerk with a cooperative bank in the city was found hanging from a ceiling fan in his bedroom, while his wife (58) was found dead on the bed in their Shukrawar Peth residence around 8am on Sunday.
On the basis of the circumstances and an inspection of the flat, the Khadak police are not ruling out the possibility of the man having first throttled his wife to death before ending his own life.
“The deceased couple’s relatives told us that the wife was undergoing treatment for mental health issues and was on medication for quite some time. Her husband may have found himself in a helpless situation. The couple’sson and daughter are settled in the US,” senior inspector Sangeeta Yadav of Khadak police told TOI.
“The couple’s relatives and friends stay in different parts of the city,” Yadav said, adding, “Before ending his life, the man called his friend around 7am telling the latter to come to his house urgently for some work. His friend reached the flat around 8am and found the door ajar. He went inside and found the woman motionless on the bed and theman hanging from the ceiling fan. He raised an alarm and called neighbours and relatives of the deceased man. He then called the police,” the officer said.
She added, “We rushed to the spot and found a small rope near the woman. We then brought down the man and took them to Sassoon General Hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival. ”
“We will register a case under the appropriate law after receiving the post-mortem reports,” Yadav said.
Son comes home to find man dead on the balcony
A 68-year-old laundry shop owner was found hanging from an iron angle on the balcony of his flat in Kothrud around 9. 20am on Sunday.
Senior inspector Hemant Patil of the Kothrud police told TOI, “We have registered a case of accidental death under relevant section of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) in this regard. His son (40) had gone out and the elderly man was alone in the flat. His son returned and found him hanging. He was suffering from various age-related ailments. In the past two years, four of his close relatives had passed away and he was disturbed by their deaths. ”
