A former teacher at a Pune college has approached police stating that she and her husband received videos of her in the nude from more than one Instagram account along with a threat that the clips would be circulated online unless she paid up $5,000.
The video clips were recorded two years ago by a former student who had coerced her with the threat of defaming her, the 36-year-old woman told police.
The Hadapsar police registered a case against the former student on Friday under Indian Penal Code sections 354D (stalking) and 507 (criminal intimidation by anonymous communication) and Information Technology Act sections.
Senior Inspector Arvind Gokule said the complainant and her husband received the video clips a few days ago. “The victim also received a threat online from an Instagram account that if she does not give $5,000, the video clips will be circulated widely. Whether the student who recorded the video is involved in the extortion demand is not known yet. We are investigating further,” he said.
According to the FIR in the case, the former student who had recorded the video clip developed contact with the woman in March 2020 through Instagram. He then contacted her over the phone and WhatsApp, too, and threatened to defame her if she did not accede to his demands, it stated.
The student then allegedly forced the woman to undress and recorded the act through video calls. Police said the woman had not lodged any complaint at the time.
