A Sinhagad Road police team later spotted and nabbed the duo, Aniket Munde (21) and Aditya Khandagale (19), both residents of Panmala, following a chase on foot between Navale bridge and Wadgaon bridge on the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass. “Both Munde and Khandagale are jobless men who keep moving around the city and had no criminal background until the present incident,” senior inspector Abhay Mahajan said. A case of armed robbery and murder attempt was registered against the duo.
Apart from truck driver Dattatray Jadhav, the transport firm’s peon Darshan Shinde and Santosh Thapa – an employee of an eatery next to the firm’s office – sustained injuries in the attack.
Mahajan said: “The truck had arrived from Mumbai and was on its way to Kolhapur when it halted in front of the transport firm’s office to unload and load goods for its onward journey. At this point, Munde and Khandagale entered the truck driver’s cabin and asked Jadhav to surrender whatever cash he had while threatening him with billhooks. The two also told Jadhav to drop them to Khed-Shivapur as they were hungry.”
“Peon Shinde then reached there to hand over the receipts of the goods loaded in the truck. The duo attacked Jadhav and Shinde and robbed the latter of his cash Rs1,000 and cellphone worth Rs5,000 before getting down from the truck. Thapa, who was washing utensils in front of his eatery, saw them and the duo also attacked him before running away,” Mahajan said.
