The traffic on Pune-Mumbai Highway had to be diverted for over 17 hours in Nigdi after a tanker carrying Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) overturned near the Bhakti Shakti Chowk early on Sunday. The driver of the tanker was injured in the accident.
Officials from Pimpri Chinchwad fire brigade said that the incident took place at around 3.30 am on the Mumbai to Pune side of the highway between Bhakti Shakti Chowk and Pawale Bridge.
“Primary information suggests that the tanker was moving at high speed and the driver could not control the vehicle at a diversion created for ongoing construction. The tanker turned on its side and the driver was injured,” an officer from Nigdi police station said. The injured driver has been identified as Rajendra Yadav and was being treated at a hospital.
Fire Officer Rushikant Chipade said, “The tanker was carrying 18000 litres of LPG. Due to the very high risk of LPG leakage and to avoid any mishap, the traffic on the road was diverted immediately after the accident.”
Senior Inspector Rangnath Unde of Nigdi police station said, “The traffic on both corridors of the highway was diverted from the internal roads. The diversions were in place till the time the gas was safely transferred to another tanker.” Officials said that the transfer of gas that started in the morning was completed around 7 pm after which the traffic on both corridors of the highway was resumed around 8 pm.
Meanwhile, as a precautionary measure, the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd (MSEDCL) disconnected the power supply in the Nigdi Gaothan area following the accident. A press statement from the MSEDCL said that after receiving a communication from the local police, the power connection of Sector 24 and 26 and that of Sainath Nagar in Nigdi was disconnected as a precautionary measure minutes after the accident. The disconnected affected supply to 550 households.
At around 10.30 am, the supply of Sector 26 was restored and around 5 pm, the supply of the remaining two areas was restored, MSEDCL said.
