The three have been charged under sections 304-II (rash or negligent act preceded with the knowledge that such act is likely to cause death) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the Indian Penal Code. The victim, Mithilesh Langote, hailed from Yavatmal and had moved to Moshi after securing a job with a software firm in Pimpri Chinchwad.
Senior inspector Rajendra Nikalje of the Bhosari MIDC police told TOI, “We had registered an accidental death as the three men, Sagar Gadhave (29), Suhas Gadhave (23) and Mangesh Walunj (26), had taken Langote to the hospital. They told us then that Langote had locked himself in the balcony before jumping off the balcony. We did not suspect anything as the balcony door was locked when our team had gone to check the flat.”
Nikalje said when Langote’s relatives came to Moshi to collect his belongings, they found Langote’s laptop, camera, watch and a gold ring missing. “They alerted us about this, following which we summoned the three men for questioning. They were the ones who were last present in the flat with the victim,” Nikalje said.
“The trio narrated what all had happened on May 21. We also recovered the missing articles from their possession,” he said.
The senior inspector said, “Langote was acquainted with the three men, the residents of More Vasti in Chikhali. Langote had recently become a father. On May 21, he returned to Moshi after meeting the newborn and his family members. According to the three men, he had invited them to his flat for drinks. They claimed that after they reached his flat, Langote fetched liquor for them. While consuming the liquor, one of them spilled it on the floor of the house. Langote then reacted by slapping the man who spilled the liquor, following which a quarrel erupted.”
The officer said the three men assaulted Langote and also blocked his way as he tried to rush out of the flat. “To save himself, the victim came out to the balcony of his flat and locked the door from outside. While trying to cross over to the balcony of the neighbouring flat, Langote slipped and fell on the ground floor,” Nikalje said.
He said investigations also revealed that whenever Langote used to forget his flat keys, he would enter his flat from his neighbour’s balcony. “On May 21, he attempted the same to save himself, but fell to his death,” Nikalje said.
