The incident came to the fore on Thursday after video clips of the group beating up the principal, ripping apart his shirt and chasing him into the school building amid sloganeering, went viral on social media platforms. The school remained closed on Thursday. Some of the parents, who spoke to TOI, were hoping that it would reopen on Monday.
“No one from the school has so far approached us to file a complaint related to the assault of the principal,” senior inspector Ranjit Sawant of the Talegaon MIDC police said on Thursday.
On the CCTV camera issue, Pimpri Chinchwad’s deputy commissioner of police (zone-II) Kakasaheb Dole told TOI, “The education department and the school administration are enquiring into the matter. If anything is found in their inquiry, we will take legal action.”
Sawant said, “One of the parents had given us an application about the CCTV cameras installed in the girls’ washroom of the school. One of our woman police officers visited the school and found that the camera was installed on a wall above the wash basin in the common area and not inside the toilet cubicles.”
The senior inspector said, “The school authorities told us that the camera was installed about a month-and-a-half ago to keep a watch on incidents of damaging mirrors, wash basins and electrical switches.”
The head of the institution, which runs the high school, disconnected TOI’s call made to seek his version and did not respond to the calls and messages till the time of going to press.
Pune zilla parishad’s chief executive officer Ayush Prasad told TOI, “The block education officer of the area visited the school on Thursday at the request of the police. We will be providing all assistance to the police in their investigation.”
On Tuesday, the group of parents and some other people had gathered in front of the school building, waiting for the principal to arrive and to seek an explanation from him over the CCTV camera issue.
When the principal drove in and stepped out of his car, the group started demanding an explanation from him on how the CCTV camera was installed in the girls’ washroom.
A ruckus prevailed for some time and it is the case of some of the parents, whom the TOI spoke to, that the principal and the school’s other employees behaved rudely with them and this led to the beating up of the principal.
